2016-17 Report

The Women's Blues squad consists of about 8-10 players. The squad trains together throughout the year, with a team of 8 being selected for the annual Varsity match against Cambridge at the end of Trinity term, the highlight of the Blues calendar.

Training begins at the start of Michaelmas Term under the guidance of the full-time coach, Ed Isard. During the winter, this takes place indoors at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre in Abingdon. The Blues' winter programme consists of 2-3 sessions each week including one joint session with the Robins (2nd team). Throughout Michaelmas Term and the first half of Hilary Term, matches are played every Wednesday against other universities in the BUCS League and Cup. Having gained BUCS league promotion the previous year, the Blues comfortably rose to the challenge of competing in the Premier finishing;the season at 3rd in the league.

After the British University season the focus is on the Varsity match. Preparation for the match begins in the Easter break with the Blues tour which sees the top six players from the respective Men's Blues squad and Women's Blues squad travelling abroad for an intensive period of matches and training. Recent years have seen visits to Thailand, South Africa, Florida and Peru and in 2016 the teams travelled to Portugal.

During Trinity Term the team trains 3-4 times a week on the grass courts at the Iffley Road Sports Centre as well as indoors at the White Horse Leisure Centre. Weekly matches continue from the end of the British University season in February throughout Trinity Term. The fixture list includes matches against county teams, large local clubs as well as a fixture for a combined Oxford/Cambridge team against the All England Club played at Wimbledon, and against the IC played at the Fenner's Tennis Ground in Cambridge.

The year finally culminates in the Varsity Match at the very end of Trinity. Last year the Blues were victorious for the second time in a row shoeing the tabs at Moor Park in an 11-10 thriller. They are looking forward to defending their title once again this year.
