The Men's Fourth team, also known as the Wolves, became part of OULTC in 2014-15. They train once a week under the watchful eye of our University Tennis Co-ordinator and University Tennis Ambassador. They have competitive singles and doubles matchplay during the week at Iffley Road as well as a varsity match against Cambridge in the Summer.
From 2015/16 captain Derek Laud:
'What an eventful year. We have had some ups and downs in M4 and, to all of those that went up, congratulations and to those who have recently become members of what is arguably, the best tennis team in Oxford, a warm welcome. I single out for special mention, Jason Kwong, my capable and engaing deputy. Dom Fijan for some excellent play over the season, Santiago lzquierdo Tort for a sterling performance and excellent win during varsity and, of course, Lukas Lutz (how could we forget you?) for creating the best team spirit I have ever known.
We have traveled far and wide for tennis fixtures this year. We have been to, or played against clubs from, Wimbledon, Kensington, Cambridge, and back home again, The Virgin Active on the Woodstock Road. We hosted our opposite number from Cambridge for a friendly fixture on a glorious summer's day at Iffley Road. Gosh, Cambridge are good, and it hurts to say so. Nonetheless, M4 did play welll, but the final tally reveals that Cantab were a little bit better on the day. Apart from some good tennis, we made some good friends and I hope that the friendly fixtures will continue into 2017.
M4 have made a determined effort to engage with OULTC social events. I have hosted a few events myself too. We can often be found in the TSK (best grub in town), and when invitations have been extended, at the excellent Vinnie's Club.
We have been exceptionally lucky in having Max Smeets as our coach. His enthusiasm, even on grey windy days in Oxford took us all by surprise. His training drills were tough, but created great team bonding moments. Thanks Max and thanks also to the splendid theologian Ben Page who officiated in his absence. How we found time to discuss political theory and politics during some of our Sunday sessions, I will never know.
From time to time, I have arranged for small groups to hit and play indoors at the Virgin Active. Indoor training is something that M4 does not enjoy as of right. It remains my ambition to change this. With Kush at the helm next term, I hope to win him over on this point without reverting to physical cohesion.
We are about 37 or so in size in M4. We have regularly had between 15-18 pitch up for our training slots on Sunday's. This seems a popular slot, but Thursday's less so. Nonetheless, those that have attended regular slots have found significant improvement in their play and I certainly attach great importance to improvement and commitment. We have some ambitions squad members, all knocking on the door of M3, but this cannot happen without demonstrating commitment. It's been great fun as your Captain and I hope to meet some new faces over the next academic year.
We will lose some players next term and a fond farewell. I look forward to trials next term and wish everybody the best of luck who hopes to join a team.'
