2016-17 Report

The Men’s Third Team, otherwise known as the Polar Bears, train all year round at Iffley Road Sports Ground. Every weekend, they have coaching on the Iffley hard courts, as well as a fortnightly indoor hitting session during the winter. Otherwise, the members organise practice sessions during the week on various college courts, to maintain a high standard throughout the year.

There is also the BUCS Cup competition for the Polar Bears, which they hope to do well in next year! Due to the strength and depth of OULTC, the Penguins and Polar Bears squads are never fully decided until Trinity Term so there is every opportunity to move up if players show enough potential.

The 2017 Varsity Match against Cambridge was the highlight of the academic year. After an increased number of training sessions during Trinity term, and ensuring that the team had as much grass-court practice as possible with multiple friendly matches, the team was confident going into the match. However, while the score was tight after the first day of matches, Cambridge  unfortunately managed to run away with it on the second day, due to some excellent doubles play. This year the team will focus on improving its doubles game, and come back fighting next year against Cambridge.  All in all, the Men’s Polar Bears squad has had a great year we look forward to building on it come Michaelmas 2017!
